Type Lights Feedback

September 21, 2005 03:31 PM

Some ideas that came out of the class discussion:

  • Having a wireless input device that can be tracked as it is carried around the room. The lights will change so that the image is always viewable from the location of the device.
  • Have multiple buttons around the room that each trigger a unique image only visible from the vantage point of the button.
  • Displaying a different image on each of the 3 planes (X,Y, & Z).
  • Leading the viewer into the space in such a way that the lights at first seem random and chaotic, but upon exploring and finding the ‘sweet spot’ are able to communicate a clear message.

I really like the idea of having buttons around the room. One concern I have is that if too many people were pressing buttons simultaneously there might be too many lights on for anyone to distinguish their image. Maybe the lights could be different colors or something.

Type Lights

This is my ‘Top-Down’ project idea:

This project would explore the display of type (or images?) in a three- dimensional space in such a way that the message only becomes clear from a certain vantage point.

One possible execution would involve a large array of light bulbs hanging from the ceiling at different points in X, Y and Z space. As a user types on a keyboard the appropriate bulbs are lit to form the message. Any viewers not standing in the proper viewing position will see a random display of lights.

In a medium quickly shifting from traditional hard copy output to computer displays, this project emphasizes the ephemeral quality of digital type and language itself.
